Perth To Exmouth Road Trip Complete Guide For 2024

Perth to Exmouth is a bucket-list road trip in Western Australia. Exmouth is a popular destination known for its warm weather, Ningaloo Reef abundant in sea life, and white sandy beaches.

There’s SO much to enjoy in Exmouth, but I’ll get to that shortly. The drive takes around 13 hours from Perth to Exmouth and there is a lot to see and do along the way. 

I am a Margaret River local but frequently explore the North West areas of WA. Exmouth is one of my family’s favorite holiday destinations and I’ve been visiting since I was a kid. So you can bet I know the best places to stop along the way, including where to stay to break up your drive!

This article will cover how to get to Exmouth, the best attractions along the way, what to do IN Exmouth, and more.

🌏Where Is Exmouth?

Exmouth is located on the Exmouth Gulf on the northernmost tip of the North West Cape. Exmouth is located 1252 km (698 miles) north of the WA state capital city of Perth. 

Exmouth is known for Cape Range National Park which hugs the coastline and waters of the Ningaloo Marine Park which is world heritage listed and protects many species of fish and coral. The abundant sea life is a real drawcard to Exmouth as you can easily view the Ningaloo reef fish and coral species by snorkeling from shore.

Exmouth was awarded Top Small Tourism Town of 2022. It offers an abundance of adventure activities, scenic drives, leisure, and relaxation activities. It is a family-friendly destination but also popular with young couples, grey nomads, and backpackers.

I could literally harp on about the million best reasons to visit Exmouth all day long. Exmouth is a pristine coastal holiday destination in the North West of WA, and bound to become one of your favourite destinations too. There’s almost no place better!

Given that it is situated at the tip of the North West Cape there is always somewhere to shelter from the elements. 

Exmouth offers world-class snorkeling, fishing, 4WDing and more. There’s a reason Exmouth is becoming super popular worldwide as a travel destination.

You may have heard about the iconic experience of swimming with whale sharks, perhaps a drift snorkel on the Ningaloo Reef OR even trekking amongst the magnificent Cape Range Gorge system at Yardi creek.

Who doesn’t love turtles? Honestly, they are SO beautiful to observe especially at Ningaloo Reef where you know they are protected in a UNESCO World Heritage listed marine park and completely safe and happy. 

This Turtle And Snorkel Tour was the highlight of my most recent trip to Exmouth. I loved it because it was a small group (maximum 12 pax) so really chilled out and personalized. 

I did the half-day tour departing from Tantabiddi boat ramp and saw loads more than just turtles. We saw manta rays, tropical fish, dolphins and a HUGEEEEE old cod family (1 x husband, 2 x girlfriends… eep!)

The tour guides also shared so much knowledge about the different coral systems you can see at Ningaloo Reef as we enjoyed snorkeling around them. Ningaloo Reef is one of the healthiest reef systems in the world. If you’ve ever visited the Great Barrier Reef you’ll know how important this is.

This tour is very relaxed and moves with the pace of the group. It is a wonderful way to spend a day in Exmouth.

I was comfortable in just my bathing suit in July however if you would prefer to wear a wetsuit please BYO or hire from Exmouth Surf Centre.

Fantastic tour highlighted by a great team. Although I did not go into the water, my two children (18 and 20) loved it. They saw multiple turtles but also a lorge variety of fish and other sea creatures. While I stayed on the boat, had nice chats with the staff and enjoyed the fruit and home baked muffins they brought out for us. 🚗Perth To Exmouth Drive Time

Perth to Exmouth Drive time is 12 hours and 52 minutes without stops. I’ve driven it in one day with two fuel/toilet stops before (with a child!) but wouldn’t recommend it. It’s so much nicer to stretch your legs and explore some of the attractions on the way from Perth to Exmouth.

The route is basically Indian Ocean Drive or Brand Highway from Perth until you join the North West Coastal Highway (sometimes referred to as Coral Coast Highway). You remain on the North West Coastal Highway until the Minilya – Exmouth turn off which is approximately 110 km south of Exmouth and takes just over an hour to travel.

The roads are all sealed roads and Minilya-Exmouth Road has been recently upgraded. The roads are all suitable for 2WD vehicles. 

You do need to be aware of native fauna and livestock on the road from Perth to Exmouth including kangaroos, camels, and cattle.

You will also likely encounter many people towing caravans and trailers. This is also a main freight route so road-trains are plentiful. It is very important to drive to conditions, have your headlights turned ON and overtake safely.

🗺️Perth To Exmouth Distance

The distance along the most direct route from Perth to Exmouth is 1,252 km (698 miles).

There are a few destinations off the highway including Shark Bay, Denham, Monkey Mia and Kalbarri which will add additional distance and drive time to your drive from Perth to Exmouth. 

Another popular tourist route is to head inland to Karijini via Meekatharra and Newman. However, if you take this route from Perth to Exmouth you are looking at a distance of 2020 km and a drive time of 22 hours and 16 minutes without stops.

I’ve only traveled this remote route once before and am super keen to do it again with my family.

🚗How To Get From Perth To Exmouth By Car

If you’re wondering how to get from Perth to Exmouth by car it’s relatively simple. Take Tonkin Highway north until you join Brand Highway at Muchea. 

Brand Highway will take you all the way to Geraldton before you begin your journey on the North West Coastal Highway which you will follow all the way to the Minilya-Exmouth turn-off. You will take a left onto the Minilya-Exmouth turnoff for the last hour or so of your journey from Perth to Exmouth.

This is the fastest route by a few minutes but does not include the coastal towns of Cervantes (where you can see the Pinnacles WA at Nambung National Park) OR Jurien Bay.

To include Cervantes, The Pinnacles, and Jurien Bay in your journey you will need to take Indian Ocean Drive north from Perth. This route hugs the coastline all the way to Geraldton where you then join the North West Coastal Highway for the remainder of the trip (same as above). This route takes 12 hours and 46 minutes without stops and is 1248 km. So very minimal difference in time or distance.

Do I need an International Drivers License?

An international driver’s license is recommended if you’re planning on hiring a car in Australia but it is not required. If you are visiting from overseas you can check current information at the Department of Transport website. 

🚌How To Get From Perth To Exmouth By Bus

It is simple to catch a bus from Perth to Exmouth. Integrity Coachlines departs from the Beaufort Street tourist terminal a few times a week. The bus trip takes approximately 17 hours and 45 minutes and is an overnight journey with regular stops. 

You can book one-way journeys, return trips from Perth to Exmouth or hop on – hop off passes to give you flexibility as you explore the northwest. 

A one-way adult fare from Perth to Exmouth is $262 AUD. Reduced fares for pension/ concession holders and children are available. 

Integrity Coachlines also travel inland to Karijini from Exmouth which I’d recommend including in your northwest itinerary if you have the time. 

✈️How To Get To Exmouth By Plane

Well, the airport is actually Learmonth Airport which is about 36 km south of Exmouth.

World War ll saw an airfield being built which was redeveloped in the 1950s as a RAAF base. All current civil flights to Exmouth (Learmonth airport) operate out of the RAAF base. 

The airport is architecturally designed to represent a coral reef and it’s really amazing for a regional airport. 

Qantas flies Perth to Exmouth (Learmonth) a few times a week and in peak periods also flies direct from Melbourne To Exmouth (Learmonth). 

You can arrange to have a hire car to pick up at Learmonth airport. Otherwise, there is a regular shuttle that connects with flights to take you into Exmouth town. 

Bookings for the shuttle can be made online at Exmouth Bus Charter or through the Ningaloo Visitor Centre.

It’s hard to narrow down the best stops between Perth and Exmouth but I’ve done the hard work and got to the 13 best stops between Perth and Exmouth for you all!

1. The Pinnacles (Namburg National Park), Cervantes

The Pinnacles are the perfect first stop on the way from Perth to Exmouth. Only about 2.5 hours north of Perth you’ll find the spectacular natural limestone formations of the Pinnacles located in the Nambung National Park. 

You can stretch your legs here with an easy 1.2 km (return) stroll to the Desert View Lookout which is a signed track meandering through the pinnacles before reaching the lookout.

Alternatively, you can drive the signed track through the Pinnacles which is a 4km loop track that will take you past the Desert View lookout and further into the park.

The Lobster Shack is possibly the most famous place to stop for lunch on the way from Perth to Exmouth. It really is the perfect place to enjoy some fresh seafood including Lobster of course, after seeing the Pinnacles. 

There is a semi-enclosed nautical-themed playground here for the kids and a few photo opportunities throughout the building. Sometimes they even have a jumping pillow in the playground!

I’m partial to a seafood chowder here but also can recommend the bucket of Carnarvon prawns. It was huge!

I’ve personally jumped with Skydive Jurien Bay and found the crew professional, engaging, reassuring and knowledgeable. You jump from 14,000 feet, take in the views of the pristine coastline, and land on the soft white beach side of the turquoise coast. How memorable!

Sea Lions could very well be my spirit animal! Sea Lions are rare and animated mammals known as the puppies of the sea due to their friendly and playful nature.

There are several islands in the Jurien Bay Marine Park that Australian Sea Lions inhabit. It is thought there are only 8000 – 10000 left of this rare species. 

Turquoise Safaris are experts on all things Marine life around Jurien Bay and pride themselves on sharing valuable knowledge with their tour guests. 

There are options to snorkel with the Sea Lions or attend as an observer. The vessels are also wheelchair accessible and there is a max of 12 guests on any tour so it’s really personalized.

5. Ellendale Pool, Geraldton

You can swim at Ellendale Pool although at your own risk especially when water temperatures are warm due to the risk of bacteria, causing Meningitis. You can camp here, SUP, kayak or canoe. There are picnic tables, BBQ facilities, toilets, and even a children’s playground.

Horrocks also offers excellent fishing and some fun 4WD tracks nearby. We love how small Horrocks is with just one campground and a general store that serves up epic fish and chips.

Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake is an iconic attraction near Port Gregory, and a perfect place to stop for photos on a road trip from Perth to Exmouth. The shades of pink change throughout the day depending on the sun but like most places, it’s pretty spectacular at sunrise and sunset. 

This strawberry-pink lake near Kalbarri is about a five-hour drive north of Perth and just over 8 hours south of Exmouth. It’s a popular spot for photographers, tourists and families wanting to see this natural wonder on the way from Perth to Exmouth.

9. Kalbarri National Park, Kalbarri

From Perth to Kalbarri is about 6 hours. It is located off the North West Coastal Highway by about 74 km so I recommend making this an overnighter. In fact, we usually stay two or three nights in Kalbarri on our way from Perth to Exmouth.

There is a lot to see and do in Kalbarri but the main attractions in the Kalbarri National Park are:

• The Kalbarri Skywalk
• Kalbarri Z Bend Trail
• The Loop and Nature’s Window Trail

10. Shell Beach, Shark Bay

Shell Beach in Shark Bay, Denham is literally a beach of shells. It truly is a must-see in the Francois Peron National Park. It’s super incredible to experience. It’s called Shell Beach because it’s literally made up of shells moving with the tides over millions of years. There is no sand! There are only a few places in the world like this.

You can swim at Shell Beach. Shell Beach is very high in salt (hypersaline) meaning it’s great for buoyancy and floating. So it’s a suitable swimming beach for most abilities.

Shell Bay is on the turnoff from North West Coastal Highway into Shark Bay (Denham). So if you’re planning to do a quick stop take that into account as it’s 85km from the turnoff at NW Coastal Highway to Shell Beach and then 85km back again. I really like Shark Bay, so personally I would see Shell Beach on my way into Shark Bay for an overnighter.

11. Monkey Mia Dolphin Experience, Monkey Mia

Monkey Mia Dolphin Experience has been one of the most popular tourist attractions in Western Australia for many years. 

I’ve personally enjoyed it many times since I was a young child. What I love about it as I get older is the focus on sustainability and the need to protect the dolphins from relying on human contact and food. 

The dolphins are offered food a couple of times in the morning from 7:45 am – 12 noon. I would recommend getting to Monkey Mia around 7:30 am. However, they frequently visit the shallows throughout the whole day. 

Remember they are wild animals so they call the shots! 

Last year when we visited our highlight was actually viewing a female turtle swimming in the shallows and close to the jetty away from the crowds!

12. Fruit Loop Drive Trail & Cactus Garden, Carnarvon

Carnarvon is a massively underrated tourist destination in my opinion. Some of the BEST fresh produce in our state comes from Carnarvon and if you haven’t tried dried mangoes from Morel’s Orchard, you should!

The Fruit Loop Trail covers around 26 km and takes a full day but includes incredible tropical fruit plantations and banana plantations in Carnarvon and heaps of opportunities to enjoy refreshments and take a couple of holiday snaps.

The Cactus Garden in Carnarvon has been quite the Instagram-famous stop-off on the way from Perth to Exmouth and it’s easy to see why. Cactus lovingly grown over many years by gardener Robert Westcott make the perfect backdrop for your holiday snaps.

13. Turtle Eco Tour, Coral Bay

Coral Bay is only about an hour south of Exmouth. It’s a wonderful last stop on your way from Coral Bay to Exmouth. 

I have such fond memories of splashing around in the pristine turquoise waters as a child and since then have enjoyed kayaking, paddle boarding, and snorkeling on the Ningaloo Reef.

The Ningaloo Reef is a heritage-listed marine park which means sea life is healthy and thriving. This means turtles too! This tour allows you to view these majestic ancient creatures as they enjoy their natural habitat. 

You can enjoy a snorkel if you choose to, otherwise, you can view the turtles in Coral Bay from the Glass Bottom Boat Tour.

RAC Cervantes Holiday Park is such a great spot to stop on the way from Perth to Exmouth if you are wanting to break up your trip. Cervantes is a short 2 hours and 30 minutes north of Perth and makes the perfect base for exploring Cervantes and the Pinnacles in the Nambung National Park.

My family has stayed here a few times and we love the super clean, well-appointed cabins, modern games room, and the massive pool. It’s a short stroll to the town beach and there is a cafe at reception so you can grab a caffeine hit in the morning before continuing your road trip from Perth to Exmouth.

Last time I stayed here with my family I was blown away by the size of the cabin! It fit us all comfortably, with a separate lounge area and a balcony and parking right beside the cabin.

Geraldton can be pretty underrated as a destination in my opinion as there is lots to do here and some epic fishing grounds.  

Sunset Beach Holiday Park is in a fantastic spot, within walking distance of the beach and slightly out of town but still close to a supermarket and bottle shop, etc. 

It has all the facilities you’d expect from a decent holiday park including a jumping pillow and playground for the kids.

This place is good value and well worth a stop-over so you can explore attractions in Geraldton.

Wooramel River Retreat has unpowered campsites, permanent safari tents, and even some donger-style rooms with power. The great thing about booking the rooms is no setup is required so you can leave all your gear packed for Exmouth.

There is an epic new camp kitchen as well as a cafe here. Camp hosts usually put on meals a few times a week and it’s a great social gathering. (Pre-book meals in peak periods).

Wooramel is unique in that it has warm artesian pools/baths. It makes for the perfect spot to take in the sunset and enjoy a beer. 

However, I’ll let you in on a little secret… if you want them to yourself go early in the morning and catch the sunrise instead.

There is also a 4WD journey you can take at Wooramel which is a 70km self-paced drive around the station and includes a visit to an historical shearing shed.

Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort is the only luxury resort in Exmouth. It’s an understated 4.5-star luxurious property carefully set into the landscape of Sunrise Beach in Exmouth. 

Mantarays Restaurant is the perfect place to soak up the ambiance of tropical beachfront sunsets in comfort. The last time I was here I couldn’t resist the Coffin Bay Oysters, Mignonette with the signature Club Mulla Mulla cocktail. So much so, I went back two days in a row!

The staff are super friendly and the food and cocktails are to die for. You don’t even need to be a guest to visit Mantarays Resort for a dining experience or afternoon cocktail.

The resort has a few different options for accommodation including superior rooms, bungalows and apartments so this resort really caters to singles, couples, and families. 

It also features a resort-style swimming pool, children’s pool, gymnasium, and laundry room/laundry service.

RAC Exmouth Cape Holiday Park is a fantastic accommodation in Exmouth option for couples, families and grey nomads. 

We love it because of the two massive swimming pools catering to toddlers and adults with varying depths and family showers/baths and toilets close by.

The pool is right next to a state-of-the-art camp kitchen which honestly, probably has more kitchen tech than my own home. 

There is also an enclosed playground, tour and information desk, and kiosk/shop. A super handy spot to just grab ice creams or a bag of ice without leaving camp.

It is also conveniently located a short walk into town to enjoy the Exmouth Water Spray Ground. My kids absolutely love this, it’s great for babies, toddlers, and older children. It is a fully-fenced playground with picnic benches and tables nearby if you want to spend a few hours here.

Right across the road from the RAC Exmouth Cape Holiday Park is the Ningaloo Aquarium and Discovery Centre. So it really is the most central and convenient place to stay if you’re camping in Exmouth. There are also chalets and cabins if you’re not the camping sort.

10 Tuatog Street is a fairly basic holiday home, with 4 bedrooms and a fully fitted kitchen and oven, but I thought it was perfect for our last family holiday to Exmouth. My brother and his girlfriend used the separate granny flat, while our family stayed in the main house.

It has a drive-through driveway which was perfect for our cars and for towing the boat through, and it also had a fish-filleting station which meant we had somewhere to process all the fish we caught after a long day out on the boat! It also has a washing machine and clothesline and is quite close to the center of Exmouth.

I liked staying at this holiday home, and I would gladly stay here again if I was looking for somewhere simple and affordable in Exmouth.

Perth to Exmouth Is an amazing road trip in WA. It is personally one of my favorite holiday destinations in Australia because it is family-friendly, offers amazing fishing and diving opportunities, and plenty of beautiful spots to relax and enjoy the warm weather.

Snorkeling in Exmouth along the Ningaloo Reef is some of the best snorkeling in the world due to the exceptional health of the reef. If getting in the water isn’t your style you can enjoy viewing the reef via a glass-bottom boat or canoe. 

Wildflower season is very beautiful along the Coral Coast and is a real drawcard to the region. Exmouth is a travel destination that really ticks all the boxes.
